Before masking

My skin is sporting some congestion along my jaw line and nose. I’ve cleansed and toned my skin. Find out how I normally prep my skin for masking.

Upon opening the packet, I detected a very faint clay scent. The sheet mask came folded inside a plastic sheet. The thick wad was mostly dry with a couple droplets of water throughout. It was really easy to open the plastic sheet and retrieve the folded mud masks.

The mud masks came in 2 pieces for the top and bottom of the face. Both sheets sandwiched between a clear thin plastic backing and a thick opaque plastic backing. The sheets were evenly coated with a thin layer of pretty pink mud on both sides. The instructions called for removing the thin plastic backing, plastic the mud side on the face, then remove the thick plastic backing.

Application was relatively easy and wasn’t messy at all. The pink mud stayed put on the sheet and did not get on my fingers much.

Fit was great! Thanks to the fact that it came in 2 pieces. I was able to adjust for size. Even then, the pieces were large enough to touch my top hairline, cup my chin, and still had excess on the sides. I did find the holes a little too small for my liking, especially around the eyes. As mud masks can dry out skin, I prefer not to have it touch the delicate skin around my eyes and mouth.

Adherence was great too! But this presented itself as a double-edged sword. The moment it touched my skin, it really clung on for its dear life and refused to let go. I tried my very best to position it as accurately as I could before sticking on my skin.

I was expecting this mud sheet mask to dry out and give a tightening sensation after 10 mins, like most clay/mud masks do. To my surprise, there was no such sensation. I had the mask on for 20 mins, it wasn’t completely dry. This made it really easy to remove the mask without tugging too much at my skin.

After masking

There was a thin layer of mud residue left on my skin, which I removed with a toner-soaked cotton pad. My skin did not feel as dry or stretchy as I thought it would. There was also no extra redness or irritation. Pores were blurred and looked cleaner. I was also surprised there wasn’t additional fine lines around my eyes as mud masks can get drying.

Below is a side by side comparison of the before and after pictures.

Clean pores without irritation is a huge plus in my book. That plus the convenience of mud masking without getting sloppy or messy made the experience a really enjoyable one. Check out more JJ Young reviews here.
