CY Lab Alpha-Arbutin Skin Whitening Mask is not a skin bleaching mask. I used to get scared when I see ‘whitening’ on the labels of masks. But after trying out countless whitening masks, I learnt that they are brightening masks, meant to even out skin tone and lighten pigmentation like acne scars.
I’m amazed at all of Cy Lab’s ingredient list. They contain lesser ingredients than most sheet masks and the first ingredient is either hyaluronic acid or some kind of botanical water. Also, all of them do not contain fragrance.
Sodium Hyaluronate – aka hyaluronic acid, great for deeply hydrating skin and maintaining skin’s moisture levels
Arbutin – brightens uneven skin tones and tones down redness
My skin is feeling normal to oily as the days get hotter. Aside from that, it is not experiencing any major issues today. I’ve cleansed and toned my skin. Find out how I normally prep my skin for masking.
Out of the packet, I caught a strong powdery-floral scent. I did not like it one bit. Essence was clear and had a runny consistency. The cotton sheet mask felt very soft and was super thin, almost silk-like. It came with a perforated plastic backing to hold its shape and aid with the application.
Fit was really strange. I liked that the sheet was large enough to cover my entire face, up to my hairline. However, the eye holes were taller than they were wide and the material that was supposed to go on my philtrum ended up on my lips. So I had to shift the entire lower portion upwards, resulting in material gathering around my lower cheeks. Thanks to the softness of the material, it was really easy to manipulate it for fit.
Adherence was great thanks to how thin the material was. It clung onto my skin the entire time without lifting or introducing any air bubbles.
I took the mask off after 30 mins, it was starting to dry out and turn white around the edges.
The remaining essence patted in with ease. In doing so, I felt a cooling sensation which was such a relief to my slightly irritated skin. Finish was matte and non-sticky.
My skin felt nicely hydrated, but not moisturized. It started to feel tight very quickly so I hurriedly slapped on hydrating serum and moisturizer. The finish felt perfect for oily skin on a hot day but definitely not for combo or dry skin. It could be used as a toner mask right after cleansing but must be followed up with the rest of the skincare steps.
I also noticed my skin looking looking one shade lighter but it was matte and flat. My dark circles were accentuated from the effect. It looked different from the radiance I get from a nourishing mask. My skin also looked less red and more even-toned. Skin plumping effects were moderate.
Below is a side by side comparison of the before and after pictures.
I’m not particularly impressed with this variant, but I still appreciate the light hydration and cooling relief this gave my skin. Check out more Cy Lab reviews here.
