Review: Hanyul Pure Artemisia Watery Calming Mask ★★☆☆☆

Hanyul Pure Artemisia Watery Calming Mask claims to moisturize and soothe the skin with Ganghwa artemisia (baby mugwort) water. Ingredients analysis on CosDNA looks decently clean.

I’m a sucker for anything that calms and soothes the skin. No prizes for guessing that my biggest skin woe is redness.

Before masking

My skin is extremely congested from skipping exfoliation for the past week while I was on vacation. Also, say hello to my little red friend. I’ve cleansed, exfoliated, and toned my skin. Find out how I normally prep my skin for masking.

Out of the packet, this gave off a light scent that smelled like a mixture of clean fragrance and plants. The cotton fiber sheet felt stiff and has a medium thickness, the weave pattern reminded me of bandage gauze. Essence was clear and has a watery gel consistency. It unfolded pretty easily despite the absence of a backing.

During masking

Fit was great! There was excess on the sides and above the upper lip. Nothing that a few folds cannot resolve. This was also one of the rarer masks that came with additional material below the chin, so much so that it touched my neck, giving it the extra care it so badly need.

Adherence was disappointing. Fold lines refused to stay down no matter how much I tried to smooth them out. Material below the chin also detached within 5 mins.

I took the mask off after 30 mins, it was drying out and detaching from my face. Perhaps a shorter wait time would be more fitting.

After masking

After patting in the essence, I noticed some fold lines embossed on my face. Good thing they completely disappeared after an hour. My skin felt moderately hydrated, moderately plumped, and moderately calm. There was still some underlying redness that’s usually hard to get rid of. My little red friend had however, diminished in size. The most prominent effect I noticed was how cool my skin felt, which was extremely comfortable for my easily-reddened skin. I did not notice any brightening or skin smoothing effects.

Below is a side by side comparison of the before and after pictures.

This was a pretty moderate mask for the price. There are better calming masks out there that cost less.
