Review: Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask EX ★★★★☆

Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask EX is a gentle peel-off mask that removes impurities and dead skin cells to detoxify and clarify skin. Containing honey, finely ground solomon’s seal powder, Japanese honeysuckle, and botanicals like pine, licorice, Cnidium Officinale, and Angelica Acutiloba, this mask is supposed to do what a physical exfoliator does without being too harsh on the skin.

This has been on my wishlist forever, it’s super luxurious and has a cult following. I can’t wait to try it out!

1st try: Before masking

My skin is feeling dry and looking dull today. I’ve cleansed and toned my skin. Find out how I normally prep my skin for masking.

Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask EX

The product comes in a plastic squeezy tube with a plastic screw cap, which is very apt for such consistency. It was thick, sticky and very gooey, kinda like honey. Its color also resembled honey except this had small, dark-colored bits suspended in it. The bits were so small I could hardly feel its existence. Unlike most Sulwhasoo products, the scent of this mask puts me off. It smelled like a combination of 70% alcohol and 30% hanbang.

1st try: During masking

The mask was sticky and frankly quite a challenge to spread. It doesn’t glide on like butter, instead, I felt a resistance when I tried to push it around. Its inviting me to use more product in order to cover my entire face without stretching my skin too much. I did it both ways.

Note: I had to test this mask twice to get a better sense of it.

The first time I used it, I did not read up on it at all. I applied a thin layer directly onto clean skin.

The second time I used it, I applied toner and emulsion as per the instructions and also applied a thicker layer of mask.

I got different results from both times, it will be documented in the results section at the end.

First try: Due to the thin layer of mask used, it dried down pretty quickly. 10 mins and my skin started to feel tight and stretchy. It was quite uncomfortable. The peel off process was extremely painful, it gripped on to my skin really tightly. So much so that peeling the mask off felt like I was peeling of actual skin. I might have teared up a little.

Second try: The dry down time was longer, around 15-20 mins. It did not feel as tight and stretchy as the first time. The peel off process was painless this time round. It easily came off in 1 piece. I guess the emulsion and thicker layer of product really helped.

1st try: After masking

First try: My skin felt raw and painful. It was red and irritated, Nevertheless, I could obviously see that the layer of dull dead skin was gone. My skin felt very dry but also very smooth.

Below is a side by side comparison of the before and after pictures.

Second try: My skin felt like normal skin, it’s neither dry or hydrated. My skin looked less red and less irritated. There was a nice smooth sheen on my skin texture, like I was glowing. My skin also felt baby smooth to the touch.

Below is a side by side comparison of the before and after pictures.

Lesson of the day: Please read the instructions and do not haphazardly slap on skincare like I did.
