Formulated without sulfates, phthalates, parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, formaldehyde, butylene glycol. However, I am concerned about the presence of Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Shea Butterate, and Sodium Cocoate. These are cleansing agents and could be drying and sensitizing for some people.
Global beauty secrets. Cultural traditions. Indigenous ingredients. Nyakio learned about the beneficial skincare uses of chamomile while studying Ancient Egypt. As evidenced by Cleopatra’s own archived beauty secrets, chamomile has always been regarded as a multi beneficial remedy. For generations, noblewomen have crushed the petals and spread them over skin, leaving them with calm, refreshed skin. To this day the finest varieties of chamomile come from Egyptian farmers, as does Nyakio’s.

Honestly, the packaging looks really normal to me at first. But the process of opening the box was such a pleasant experience! Before lifting the flap to unbox, there is a message that says”
NEH-KAY-OH/: Hardworking woman in the sunshine
I find that really uplifting and cheerful.
Lift up the tab and greeted with this message:
Global Beauty Secrets
Lay out the packaging flat to reveal a pretty and informational brochure.
Including a picture of the founder, Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, gives a nice personal touch. I really liked what she said:
As a young girl, I spent a lot of time in Africa with my family of medicine men, farmers and educators. My favorite memory is of my grandmother teaching my mother and me to crush coffee beans and rub them on our skin using a piece of sugarcane to remove dry skin. I discovered that memories like these are shared by women around the world. Cultivated global beauty secrets and traditions are brought to you through friends, family and travel for naturally ageless beauty.
4 oz/ 118 ml of product came in a plastic squeeze tube with a twist-on cap. I find this packaging really hygienic and apt for a cream-type product like this. It squeezes out really easily with no need to dip my fingers in a jar.
One thing that concerns me is the lack of expiry date. In that case I will go by the rule of thumb to use up a product within 12 months once it is opened.
The sleeping mask came in the form of a thick white cream. It gave off a pretty strong almond-like fragrance. I personally prefer my skincare products either scentless, lightly-scented, or bearing an herbal scent. This is too strong for my liking. It did gradually fade into a light scent as time went by.
The sleeping mask spreads really easily with fingers. It glides over the skin and does not drag it.
At first, it forms a thick hydrating film on the skin, sealing in all the skincare layers underneath. My skin felt very soft and hydrated. And if I had an irritation, there was a sense of relief when I layered this on top of my skin.
By the end of the first hour, some of it would have sunken in and by morning, most of it would have sunken into the skin. My skin felt soft and hydrated but slightly greasy by morning. Whenever I use this, which is three times a week, I’ll have to double cleanse in the morning to totally remove the thick hydrating film.
After 2 weeks of continuous usage, my skin no longer feels tight and looks dull in the morning. On days when my skin feels dehydrated, I’ll apply a thin layer on top of layers of hydrating skincare. On days when my skin feels normal, I’ll apply less hydrating layers underneath and apply a thicker layer of this sleeping mask on top. The latter method shaves alot of time off and works out great on busy days. Its calming effects are minimal on my skin, just an initial sense of relief the instant I apply this on irritated areas, due to the thick, creamy, and therefore cushiony and comforting texture. I’d still wake up with redness like usual.
I don’t think any sleeping mask replace my HG Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Mask. This mask hydrates, calms, and softens my skin like no other. Granted, its price point is also on the higher end. Check out more Nyakio reviews here.
